What you need to start bouldering

Get the Gear

Bouldering is a much simpler form of rock climbing. If you’re going to boulder in a gym indoors, you only need a pair of climbing shoes. You can rent these at most gyms. You’ll need a crash pad to cushion your fall if you plan on bouldering outdoors. Some outdoor boulderers wear a helmet to provide extra protection. Chalk, a brush to clean off a dirty, greasy hold and a white athletic tape roll for protecting fingers are all extras that can be useful indoors or outdoors.

Choose Where You Want to Go

Climbers of any ability can enjoy themselves in a climbing gym, as there are so many routes available. Do some research on what is nearby if you prefer to climb outdoors. Local climbing clubs, shops, and friends can provide local information on where to boulder. Guidebooks will allow you to plan and research more thoroughly. Join a class or go with friends

Bouldering does not require a partner to belay you like roped climbing, but it is good to have someone with you who can spot you if you fall. It can be fun to share tips, push each other harder and climb together while tackling the same boulder problem. Consider taking a bouldering class if you don’t already have a group. You’ll gain valuable technique and get to know other climbers.
