The rise of the Gastropub

Lifestyle

Pubs have always been a great British institution and have been the centre of local communities for as long as they have been in existence. There are over 50,000 in the UK and represent many things to the people of this country. They are a place to celebrate or mourn, a place to watch sports and a place for people to retreat to after a hard week’s work. However, the pub has evolved like so many other things in society and they are not quite the same as they were even just twenty years ago.

Pubs had to evolve to stay alive and attract new patronage as the traditional boozer fell out of favour. This is when the Gastropub came into existence. In the early 1990’s it was The Eagle in Clerkenwell that is said to have been the first to turn into a Gastropub. The Gastropub is the ideal combination between a drinking establishment and a restaurant. It is a place where good food and good ale accompany each other perfectly and not just a pub that offers lunch as an afterthought. The rise of British cuisine has been helped by the numerous celebrity chefs that have re-introduced us to our cooking and baking heritage and the rise of the Gastropub has been spurred on by this. The first pub to be awarded a Michelin star is The Harwood Arms in Fulham and so there is a strong case to be argued for pubs to raise their culinary game despite some thinking that they should stick to ale.
