The town of Athy and its famous bridge

Travel

As with many towns, Athy is located near a large river. It’s one of Ireland’s many hidden treasures when you escape from the borders of Dublin and go out into the countryside. The town has seen its fair share of trouble. It was at the centre of the Confederates Wars for eight years, and various Republican, Royalist and parliamentarian forces all fought to control it.

Nowadays it is a much more peaceful place and welcomes many tourists to see its built heritage and to enjoy the river. It’s certainly the type of place you’d want to record on your phone. If yours is in need of replacing, then just go to https://kingcommunications.ie/vodafone-stores-near-me/athy/ and search Vodafone Athy. You will soon find one that will suit you.

The most interesting remains of this troubled past are the great Crom a Boo bridge and the White Castle that was built to defend it. Athy is one of the best places to cross the wide River Barrow, and its bridge made it one of the most strategically important places to control. It’s believed that this is where the town gets its name from. Ae’s Ford is thought to be the first name, and you can see how it’s become Athy down through the centuries.

A more modern claim to fame is that it was the starting point for the first official motor race in the British Isles and Ireland. In 1903 racers came from all over the world to compete.
